Also taking part were five drivers selected from each round of this year's championship - fellow Ulsterman Phillip Morrow, George Thomas, James Wozencroft and Matt Beebe.

The exact details of the award have still to be announced, but it is expected he will have a fully-funded season in the 2008 British championship, probably in a Group N Subaru.

"I really can't believe I have won," said Gass.  "It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life but to perform in front of four well respected judges has been a great experience.

"I will commit 100 per cent to this opportunity Pirelli are giving me.

"I know I have a lot more to learn but, with their support, my dream of one day becoming a World championship driver has taken a major step forward."
